I am sad to have now finished this series, I wish there was more. What a wild rollercoaster it has been.

I wanted to love this book since it's the end of the series but with all the different POVs and battles it was very difficult. It constantly swapped between different battles and there were quite a few different POVs to follow which made it confusing at times.

Phew, what a series! So glad I finished it. Five star rating is definitely for the series as a whole, as I loved this last book and how everything wrapped up, but it wasn't my favorite. Two things about it that I didn't love - One: too many battle scenes. Yes, I get that it's the final battle(s) for control of the world and all, but I just don't enjoy reading about battles. Two: Aelin was built up as this great, amazing queen throughout the whole series and in the end, she just wasn't. It didn't matter. Another character stepped up and saved the world. I didn't love that. Final issue - the way everyone paired off in the end. It just seemed a little too pat. Here we had this sweeping epic and in the end, everyone had a happy little love story, some of which felt earned and some of which didn't. But those are minor quibbles; I loved this series.

The second half of the book makes this whole story worthwhile. It’s been a long series, with Aelin scheming and plotting to try and tilt the odds in her favor the entire way. She may have started the books as an assassin, but she has always held to what is right, to making difficult choices.

There were so many characters by the end, it did start to feel a bit overwhelming. It was good to see the character arc of Chaol. Rowan is everything. And my heart broke for Manon, her journey to the end just as fraught as Aelin’s. Everyone gave the cause their whole lives.

I will give SJM this, she does write decent battle scenes. And the stakes are always high. And I’m not sure I would have read such a long series if the story didn’t hold my attention so well.

To whatever end.
