This is a retelling of a crime and who was involved and how both parties were impacted. It's a super fast read and very accessible. I like that it gives empathy to both sides, an agender teen and an African American teen.

I recommended Just Mercy to a cousin and after she finished it, she mentioned that she read this right before it and it was even more powerful in that context, so I thought I'd check it out.

I had never heard of this news story, but was seeing the book recommended everywhere, so I got the ebook from the library. It was a very interesting, well-done account of what was billed as a hate crime but might have been just a stupid decision - read it and decide. I enjoyed looking up news articles as I was reading to really round out the story, and I’m interested to see how everything pans out for the parties involved.

A great nonfiction YA book. Reads like a compelling longform magazine article. An honest and thoughtful exploration of gender, identity, race, and the juvenile justice system.
