i could not get into this. lots to like in terms of narrative non-fiction power moves, and i do love grann's long journalism but this just felt like stretching a 10k word feature into a book by pumping water and air and trivia into a thin narrative framework. that said recommended if you crave insight on the psychology of a specific flavor of late early 20th century victorian bro. clipped for my eventual TED talk on the cultural history of health goth.

I enjoyed the book. The city of the lost Monkey god is much, much better.

It was fun reading this at the same time as reading Fordlandia, another nonfiction book about the 1920s-1930s in the Amazon. The Lost City of Z tells the story of Percy Fawcett, an explorer who spent years trying to find the mythical (?) lost city of Z hiding somewhere in the vast rainforest. Fawcett disappeared, along with his son Jack and Jack's best friend, on his last mission to the Amazon, and solving the mystery of Fawcett's fate has been the mission of a number of explorers and adventurers since then.

Grann also tells a bit of the story of Fawcett's long-suffering wife and children, who were basically kept destitute and shuttled around the globe as Fawcett tried to fulfill his own dreams. That part of the story was most interesting to me, and in the end, I couldn't help feeling sad that such was given up and nothing was really accomplished.
