once in awhile i read something and i go 'oh. this is what people are on about when they talk about literature'

usually i proceed to forget this and return to my generalized prejudice against the literary genre but

oh. this is what people mean by literature. i know these characters, i sat in a bookstore and thought about my life and whether i liked where it was and what a nice dream it would be to meet someone who makes you feel awake when you've been walking around half asleep for months

One of my fave BL mangas ever... This volume is the start of a fairly realistic slow burn romance between two people of very different circumstances and ages. From the outside, it seems like a 37-year old manager of an ad agency and a young college student may have nothing in common, but Hidaka Shouko pulls off the developing connection between the two characters in a believable way. This story manages to avoid a lot of the cliches of the genre, which is not only refreshing to see but it also feels very grown up and grounded in reality in a way that a lot of yaoi/BL doesn't. The side characters get their own stories and development and feel like real people with their own lives, rather than existing for the purposes of spurring on the main couple.

Like the story, Hidaka Shouko's art style has a sort of quiet beauty-- she uses clean, mostly straight lines to draw the characters while details like the hair, eyebrows and foliage have a sketch-like, rougher quality. This is one of the things that really attracted me to her work-- her art never feels too busy or crowded with tons of screentones, which allows the focus to stay on the characters' expressions and actions. Speaking of which, the way she draws facial expressions is a lot more subtle and less exaggerated than in many manga I've read, and I first I felt that the characters weren't expressive enough, but as I read on, I feel that this really suits the more realistic, mature storyline.

I love the art. The story is a little slow to start, but quite engrossing. It's not peppered with all of the standard lines that manga tends to be saturated with. This novel is largely about getting to know the main character. There's a confusing jump from the first to second chapter that made me turn back the page to make sure none were missing, but it was preceding a flashback fill. It's enjoyable.

this volume is a bit slow (iirc all my favorite parts come in the later volumes when they’re already together), but the scene where sakurai realizes he’s in love is still one of the best romantic scenes in all fiction imho

I love this manga so much. Everything is just so beautiful and *right* - the artwork is gorgeous, and the pacing wonderfully slow and believable. This is one of my favourite ongoing series, mostly because it feels so grown up. Love this.
