I was impressed by the timelessness and the constraint with which this novel was written. Keegan writes in a very sparse, to-the-point but still very well versed prose that is a joy to read, the harrowing contents notwithstanding. She doesn't let emotions take the overhand, which makes the (real) drama all the harder to read. A very Dickensian novel, as I'm sure has been said before.
