This was an intriguing read for me in the sense that I was transported to Australia and to a time I know so little about. I really liked the characters and how their exploits at the Top Note nightclub, performing on the stage, was interwoven with a need to do some amateur sleuthing to clear the name of a loved one.
The book is gentle and positive without upsetting developments (apart from the poverty) detracting from the main focus, the ongoing and blossoming relationship between Frances Palmer and owner of the nightclub Jack. The pair are surrounded by faithful employees, friends and family who all work together to bring about a happy conclusion. During my reading I discovered what a 'painted horse' is and delighted in the easy way in which events were never too far from slotting together for the greater good.
There is glamour, some deft twisting of the rules to enable the Top Note gang to do their detective work undercover, and plenty of helpful contacts to make the connections that are necessary for discovering the truth on the racecourse.
I would recommend this read to others and, having read one other book by Carmen Radtke, wouldn't hesitate to pick up another to enjoy.
