Jessica Shattuck has created a moving tale of women and friendship. In the worst of circumstances, the characters in her novel join together to survive the horrors of the aftermath of WWII. The prose brings to life the people, the environment, and the emotions of the time. As is often the case, friendships grow and wane over time, and sometimes it is time that allows the participants to see the true value of others. I found the movement backwards and forwards through time, and the movement from each character's point of view difficult to follow at times. However, the perspective of the German people before, during, and after the war was quite enlightening and I'm glad that the author used this opportunity to educate this reader.

4 1/2 stars. A WW II story set in Germany told from a unique perspective. Marianne is the widow of a resister who died in the failed plot to assassinate Hitler. After the war, she gathers women and children in the crumbling castle owned by her husband’s family and organizes them into attempting to survive and rebuild their lives after the war. I’ve read a lot about WW II but never from this viewpoint - about the people who tried to live everyday “normal” lives along the bombs, the Nazis, and the brainwashing of Hitler. Masterful descriptions, vibrant characters, and vivid insight into the horrors of what was happening in Germany during that war.

I was skeptical about YET ANOTHER book about normal people during WWII (German this time—) and didn’t think anything could live up to All The Light We Cannot See or The Nightingale, but this does. It’s poignant and powerful. The emotions are so real- and the writing is so powerful. The characters are so real to me- I am in awe of this book. Phenomenal.
