As with most of the later books in this series, I have conflicted feelings about this book. There were parts I enjoyed, like the couple’s banter and I loved Alf as a character. But I struggle with the gendered language and how “girl dressed as a boy” was treated, especially Hugh’s thoughts about the situation. I wish she had been allowed to find a place in between instead of her just ending up giving up boy Alf completely to become a proper lady.

I love the way Hoyt tied the original force of the Maiden Lane series - The Ghost of St Giles - with the new concern of the series - defeating the Lords of Chaos. Nothing better for me than a historical romance with a woman living as a man, I truly love to see it. I think the final three books in the Maiden Lane series are the strongest, aside from Wicked Intentions which is truly superb.
