After reading the first book of The Expense series and not reading much of Daniel Abrahams books I decided to give his newest read a try. After reading the inside of the covers flap, I got a sense of whom I would be following and getting to know more of in Alys. After getting halfway through I didn’t really get a lot out of this character. I spent more time falling in love with her friend Sammish. It seems that this book should have been about Sammish then Alys. I did spend most of my time trying to keep the parts of the city in mind which took me out of the book a little. All in all this was a good beginning book in the series and I look forward to the next one. Let us hope this is a good building block for the remainder of the series

Strong worldbuilding marks this series start. While the jacket text focuses on Alys I felt particularly drawn to the "unnoticeable" Sammish. Grief and trauma are driving forces throughout the novel as Alys navigates her brother's death and legacy.
