It will be interesting to see whether or not psychedelics will be used as a treatment for smoking cessation and alcohol addiction in the future in controlled environments. I think it will also be interesting to see where the research goes in regard to treating depressive disorders and treating patients on respite. The idea of transcendence intrigues me and has since studying yoga and Buddhism. A big part of my "spiritual" identity is in how interconnected life, the universe, and everything is. It's very interesting to hear how interconnected to everything people feel when they are under the influence of psychedelics. Who knows what the future may hold in pharmaceuticals? There will certainly be limits as far as the law is concerned if anything comes of the research.

The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that it is simply a bit outdated at this point, but this is an incredible and insightful read!

The book is many things—a clear-eyed exploration of the meaning and implications of hallucination; an exploration of the nature consciousness, self, and spirit; an indictment of the twin futilities of the drug war and the American mental health system. Most of all it’s promise of potential salvation, not just for those suffering from addiction, mental illness, and despair, but for all us if we can be granted the insights that result in the dissolution of the ego.

Now how do I go about taking part in the Phase 3 psilocybin trials?

This book answers the question "What if one of the hosts of All Things Considered tried acid?"
It's a bit on the dry side if you're not into the subject matter, but ever since graduating from the DARE program I've been curious about psychedelics, if terrified to try them myself.

Reading this was especially timely with Oregon's recent opening up of drugs for medical use.
