This was a fine read. It was sad but I didn't cry while reading it.
I had to suspend disbelief for several plot points. As a very minor example, and not a spoiler, what grown man doesn't have his social security number memorized? There were many other instances where I found the story to be unbelievable.
There was also a bit too much anti-femenist sentiment, which just isn't my cup of tea. For example, the main female character allegedly never cared before about a man being able to protect her, but she liked how this man (the main male character) obviously could.
Overall, a decent story, but I just didn't love all the details. I'm still a big fan of the TJR's later books.

4.5/5 for me… TJR does it again! this is a true story of appreciating what you have while you have it. I went through all the emotions as I read this & it made me so emotional as I put myself in Elsie’s shoes. Such a heavy read but with light hearted ending as she found peace from the loss of her new husband. She handled learning how to be newly married while learning how to be newly married with such grace. The last line though…. that will forever kill me.

I am slowly working my way back through TJR's novels as I just love her writing.
Elsie and Ben are only just married, after being together 6 months, as they had that instant connection. But in a cruel twist of fate Ben is taken from her when he is hit by a truck and dies instantly. Elsie faces loss and heartbreak, all the while dealing with a mother-in-law she never knew. This was heartbreaking and while I enjoy all TJR novels and liked this one, it wasn't one of my favourites unfortunately. I think it was too sad for me personally, with far less down's than up's than her other novels.
