Despite a slow start and wondering whether I could find anything of interest in this story set in Spain about an author dealing with the mysterious death of his husband, I am so glad I stayed with it.  Excellent story with mystery, history, beautiful landscapes, unexpected villains, and a wonderful partnership among the author, a priest, and a retired cop, as they search for the truth.

This book broke my heart multiple times. From the get go you know it won't be an easy read exactly, it's dealing with a lot of tough themes, but I still tore through it because I just couldn't put it down. I cried more than once reading this. The author has such a deeply empathetic way of writing these intensely flawed characters and their fraught relationships that leaves me in awe. Highly recommend but mind the content warnings if you are someone who struggles with darker material.
