Cassandra is a heroine I could get behind. She was enlightened, educated, kind, and invested in doing good works that truly mattered. That she winds up with the Duke of Ashmont is a twist that had me laughing a lot throughout the story. The Duke is first seen in A Duke in Shining Armor as a jilted bridegroom. He's selfish, self-centered, drunken, loves a good fight, loyal to his friends and is part of a threesome called their dis-graces. He & Cassandra had met as children and it helps the plot along.

They play off each other well, Cassandra is the smart one who is stunned into silence at Ashmont's golden beauty. Ashmont is not use to using his brain box but understands very quickly that Cassandra is the one for him, he'd better straighten up, & winning her would be a challenge. A truly enjoyable read.

As an aside, Ashmont reminds me of another of Loretta Chases characters, Bertie Trent. Their speech patterns and even words like brain box are similar. I loved Bertie. If you get a chance he's in both Lord of Scoundrels and The Last Hellion. Worth the read for the main characters & plot but I think you'll love Bertie.

This was glorious, and I loved every bit of it. Here’s hoping we don’t need to wait three years for the next book in the series!

What a masterpiece! I loved so much about this book:
  • Cassandra as a character. She was so inspirational: her ambution, her confidence, her daring and most of all that she made Ashmont work for it because she knew that she deserved better even though she's had a crush on him since forever. She saw his potential and would not accept less.
  • Ashmont as a character. He was lost and he really had to work on himself and most importantly he understood that he had to change something or he wouldn't be worthy. He's reading feminist literature for her! 😭 I also really appreciated that he immediately felt bad for causing Keffee harm and wanted to right his wrong even though he was "only" a former jockey.
  • Cassandra and Ashmont as a couple. The witty banter, the pointd he had to earn and their combined recklessness. Chef's kiss!
  • The family that sticks together when times are tough or when one of them is threatened.
  • I loved that this took place over 2 months, especially since the first book in this series took place over the course of 4 (!) days. I felt this gave the characters enough time to get to know each other again without rushing anything.
  • The overall theme of Greek mythology.
  • When Ashmont was dangling from the balcony and Cassandra would not even check on him to see if he was alright. And his response? She had every right to push me. Swoon!
  • The fighting with the umbrella during the ladies' meeting. What a fun couple!
