Tying together two disparate narratives in an awkward and unnecessary fashion, this book is full of inane characters who behave without thinking and some junky moralizing.

Having read the second Paddy Meehan book first, I jumped backward and read the first. I love the way Mina writes. She digs into her characters' interiors, describes the world so it is painted in your mind's eye, and plots like a demon. Her portrayal of the dying world of old-school journalism in Scotland is fascinating. Warning: she often describes murder, up to the point of death, from the victim's perspective, and it's harrowing. I'll be reading more of Mina. And luckily, there's lots to read.

Set in Glasgow in the early eighties. The book had great descriptions of of the city, the class and sectarian divides of the time, and how a daily newspaper runs. The characters were all very believable and Paddy was a compelling though young and flawed heroine. The only slight quibble I had was that the plot was fairly pedestrian and the entire subplot about the real life Paddy Meehan, while interesting, seemed a bit like page filler.

I actually really enjoyed this book. The writing is powerful even though the subject matter is highly disturbing. I am looking forward to the next book in this series

Paddy Meehan is a great character and you are rooting for her the whole way but...some of the prose seems awkward and just difficulty to navigate.

The thing about Denise Mina is that you can’t just read one book at a time.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable novel with the wonderful backdrop of 1981 Glasgow. I was there...
