I feel the need to preface this by saying this is not my typical genre by a long-shot. I read this for a local radio book club to get me out of my comfort zone.

That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It was a nice, fresh take on WWII historical fiction: a genre which I feel has been incredibly over-saturated with the same romanticized stories about how "great and important" America was during the time while conveniently glossing over our shortcomings.

This novel was a decently quick read with well-developed and realistic characters that really came to life. My one critique is that sometimes the main sort of climax of the story felt incredibly rushed and fell a little flat.

Slow read until the last 4 chapters. Overall powerful examples of the racism towards and experiences of indigenous people during the time but the narrators constant state of annoyance or anxiousness was a bit of a bummer.
