I wasn't sure going into this whether I was going to like this book or not, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised. The book has an overall creepy feeling to it, which really helps set the tone for what's happening in this town. The author's very good with imagery, especially when it comes to describing the various members of the city's underground. I'll definitely be checking out more by this author!

The idea of this book is great; stolen children, sacrifices, and a freaky underworld should make for an amazing read. I did like this book, but it was too.. blank for more than three stars. The interactions between some of the characters just aren't developed or explained well enough. I don't understand why Mackie's parents decided to keep him and I was hoping for a good explanation. The only character that seemed to show any real emotion was Emma; I could feel the love she had for her brother. As far as anyone else, the feelings just weren't loud enough. The view of Gentry is too limited, we have a general idea of why children are taken but the benefits aren't clearly explained. It doesn't feel as though I'm reading a book from a male point of view, but from a female writing as a male. This is one of those books I did like, but I had to actually think about what I was reading instead of letting it flow through my mind. It is very well written and certainly does keep one's attention. I did like the dark feel of the story and the idea behind the book, and I'm ready to see what else this author can provide.

Delicious! A dark and romantic tale of a changeling grown, but dying ... beautiful prose, just long enough, and outstanding character development. The romance was a tough one -- what Twilight aspired to be but could never reach. The girl, Tate, is tough and unflinching in her demand for someone to do the right thing, against all odds... And she has several opportunities to kick some serious ass throughout. Mackie is sweetly flawed, sick in body and in heart when he discovers the truth about himself, and creatures like him. I loved every moment, and was so pleased with the conclusion, which I didn't predict.

World building- I loved it so, so much. The small town of Gentry seems so typical at first, but we soon learn that dark secrets keep the whole town running. Weird things happen there all the time but the citizens are so ignorant, only believing what they want to, to avoid facing the dark truths. Yovanoff does an absolutely beautiful way of conveying this sense in her writing, characters, and the way the town is described. It's all very vague at first, which may bother some people, but I didn't mind it, because as the book progressed it became much more clear.
Mackie Doyle was amazing and I loved him. It was such a unique perspective to hear from. He wasn't supposed to live when he was younger, yet by the love of his family, especially his sister, he did. I also loved reading about Tate, Drew, Danny, and all the other supporting characters.
This book had so many good elements, but I had one issue that is a bit difficult to pin down exactly: it was too put-down-able. It took too long to really get to the plot and besides Mackie's charm, I found it hard to find something to keep reading. The resolution of the plot was fairly simple, and it all ended well, almost too well.
According to Goodreads, this is the first of a series called "The Replacement", so I'm expecting there to be sequels, though that is a bit disappointing for me because for some reason I think this book would be better as a stand alone. It wrapped up it's own story really well.
I almost don't want to rate this book, because I feel like I can't compare it to others. I didn't love it or hate it, it was just there somewhere in the middle. I'm giving this book a 3.5/5 rating, though I debated for a while about giving it a 4. I've read a lot of other people's reviews and they all love this book, so I would recommend it!

This book was very slow to begin with. I had a hard time getting into it and I almost abandoned it. I'm very glad I didn't, though, because it ended up being a fairly good book.

I tried, I really did I just could not finish this. Some blame lies in the guys voice on the audio book but for the most part the story is just boring. Like counting the bumps on a popcorn ceiling is more entertaining kind of boring.
Firs the audio book - the actor pronounced every word with such elocution that it drew it out unusually long. So in the time it took the actor to read one sentence I could have read 4 if I had the actual book. So that is partially why the story felt so incredibly drawn out.
The other reason the story was slow was just because of the way it was written. The plot was slow to catch on, the mystery that Mackey was not who he said he was wasn't much of a mystery, even the town in general knew of the other's existence and that they were among them.
Seriously this was putting me to sleep which was pretty bad considering I was listening to it while driving my hour and something 2 hour commute back and forth to work. Sleep driving is so not recommended.
Still I did give it an extra star for the absolutely creepy vibe it had - whether that was due to hearing the words or the story itself I have no idea. But it was creepy.
All in all though, I am not wasting any more of my time on this. Next book!
