OMGG i loved this book so much!! the moment i started, i could not put this down. i fell in love (again) with schwab’s beautiful imagery and worldbuilding, and i loved the concept of using alternate realities with magic! this made me feel like i was entering a retelling of a classic fairytale, where pirates and magicians exist. it was so full of adventure and had lots of exciting twists and turns! i recommend this to everyone <3

The relationships in this book are the real gem. Lila and Kell's tumultuous but incredibly solid friendship and the complicated but undying brotherhood between Kell and Rhy.

This book had a really interesting central concept - parallel Londons each with different amounts of magic. Some magic in this book uses blood, which is maybe worth knowing if you also have a history of self harm but I could get past that as it wasn't too graphic.
I liked the characters and look forward to reading the next part of their story.
I also liked the structure of the book, with titled sections split into shorter chapters.

Bored me to tears. Though very cinematographic, the book possesses the repetitiveness of a sitcom. The characters fills every pigeonhole. There wasn't a single turn of the plot that was unpredictable, or at least moving.

The only interesting thing about this book is the trope in reverse. Usually, the main character went to the forbidden place and brings some gifts out; in the reverse trope, the character is bringing a cursed gift into forbidden place, just to leave it there for good.

But, considering that a clever trope reverse usually comes from a clever author who did a good research and thought every detail, then, my guess, that author just stole some ideas from other fantasy writers, and with it put their finger in the sky.

I absolutely loved this. I saw a lot of the negative reviews mention it is too slow and cumbersome the first half, but I didn't feel that. I enjoyed the stront worldbuilding and meeting all the characters just as much as I enjoyed the jam packed crazy last 75 pages. Immediately going to read the next one in the series!
