A good, poetic meditation on what it means to be human and wrestle with grief, love, and art. At times the author seemed to be trying too hard to be pithy (I really could have done without all the references to ejaculate, but hey, you do you, Sheila Heti), but it was a solid and bittersweet read.

okay so i went through a lot of ups and downs with this book. like initially i was burning through and absolutely eating up the metaphors and then i reached a point (leaf) where it lost me. but honestly towards the end i came back again. am i completely in love and obsessed with this book? absolutely not. but i will say there was a lot of beauty in the way heti talks about love and the individual experience, and how that can change a relationship. the last page was sweet and special. maybe i'll reread it in a year. maybe not.

This was an extraordinary read. Expansive and strange and lofty, it was a beautiful mediation on grief and living during what often feels like the end times. This feels like something I need to read and reread, I got this from my library but I definitely think this is one that needs a spot on my shelves, probably underlined and dog-earred wishing an inch of its life.
