I've heard many praises for Kingsolver's writing. The Bean Trees was the first available book of hers I saw when I was browsing on Libby. The novel follows the slowness and ordinariness of Taylor's life primarily over a year or so, discussing questions of family and home as well as generosity, sacrifice, and love. I didn't dislike the book and was moved by various moments, but still, The Bean Trees didn't connect with me in a super specific way.

This book holds a special place because it was sent to me by a friend who has volunteered with me and she felt it reflected our dynamic of her sending me supplies and me being on the ground. Bring compared to Mattie is an honor.

I love the whole story and how community and family are what you make it. We are more the same than we are different when we come together and work to survive. A great read and reminder of this.

A story where you easily relate to the lead character and want to see her succeed and find her path. The cast of characters each have a lovable quality and you cant help but root for them.

A beautiful book with Kingsolver’s signature humour, loveable characters, and amazing writing. Although the plot was not very dramatic, I kept reading because I was invested in the characters. I liked Demon Copperhead more, but this does still have Kingsolver’s highly endearing writing style.
