I love Barbara Kingsolver books. This was her first and it is awesome! I loved Poisonwood Bible too. I can't wait to read the rest of her work.

I seem to have a penchant for books where people create a "found family." I love Taylor's voice as the narrator here. There are some profound truths in this book that go well beyond the story.

Stretching her wings

Takes a little while to bed-in and take itself as seriously as the author and her talents deserve, I thought, but full of good things.

I am so glad I decided to reread Barbara Kingsolver's debut. Although the scope is narrower than Kingsolver's more recent novels, her themes of self-sufficiency and identity and even her love of plants appear in this first book. Taylor Greer leaves her home and mother in rural Kentucky and lands in Tucson, Arizona, minus two tires and plus a toddler girl who was thrust into her car late one night outside an Oklahoma bar. She gets a job from the tire shop owner, who also shelters Central American refugees, meets a fellow Kentucky expat and starts to build a new family at the edge of the desert.

I’m finally starting my 3-in-1 paperback of this series! This one reflected Kingsolver’s youth really well. It’s very gentle, but not slow. There are really dense topics, but she infuses it with so much softness. I love Barbara Kingsolver, and I can’t wait to adventure into her original works!
