my first adult foray into norwegian fiction and it was an interesting one w/ the bird tribunal. woven thruout ravatn's psychological thriller is an undercurrent of tense mystery, not only around the 2 main characters' real circumstances but also their unpredictable and often volatile emotions + interactions between them.
while the novel doesnt live up to its hype particularly in the first half that can be dull w/ overfocus on the atmospheric landscape, the last third of the book rly amps things up and keeps the tension going until the very end. the so-called mysteries arent anything extraordinary - i actually predicted many of the reveals - but ravatn handled them masterfully thru her presentation and execution, making this a satifying enough read.
