Solid quasi-medieval fantasy world with a central romance set amongst some political intrigue. I liked the way that they played with successional politics. I loved the twist that
Zav actually did kill his siblings, though I wish that scene had been less cut-and-dry that Zav wasn't truly at fault
. I think this book falls into a trap of needing the main characters to always be morally justified - let them be ugly sometimes!

Also, it has undead dragon corpses littering the landscape that power an order of magical knights. That's just fun.

Eh, this just wasn't very good. I should have loved it - magic, bodyguard trope, politics, romance, opposites attract, etc, but it wasn't well executed. The characters keep doing things that made no sense, the bodyguard and king were previously in a relationship together when they were younger but the reasons they broke up are never explained or even how long they were initially together. The politics don't make a lot of sense - the nobles want a war with the neighboring country but it's never really explained why.

Thank you to BookSirens for granting me an arc of Reforged.

I loved reading this. Balen and Zavrius' banter was everything, I was rooting for them the entire way through and being exasperated by the way they kept dancing around their feelings for one another.

Lance and Mallet were the comedic aspect of the book and I adored them, especially Lance everytime he said something and then spluttered over his words as he apologised depsite Balen and Zavrius really not caring that much how he spoke to them.

The four are unlikely friends, Lance and Mallet are met on a trip back to the palace but it proves to be beneficial in a place where people are trying to assassinate Zavrius for being King, something many people don't believe he has a right to claim.

I'm glad I picked this up (wanted to read the whole series because I saw the cover of Reclaimed and really wanna pick that up when it comes out) and I really enjoyed it as an audiobook. The narrator does a fantastic job with it.

I will say, I wasn't super invested in the romance aspect (I don't feel like the characters interacted with each other enough, and it being a second-chance romance all of their getting to know each other happened before the book), but I really loved the mystery to the story (though, like most mysteries I tackle with audiobooks, I found it hard to keep track of character names and when it was revealed that a character was behind something I REALLY had to think to figure out who the hell that was lol).

Probably my favourite thing about this story was Mallet and Lance - the two of them added some great humour to the story, and their loyalty was touching.

Cons: I feel like it could have been edited down.  Some characters were mentioned but didn't show back up in the story. The names. I understand it's fantasy, but some spellings are a bit excessive.

Pros: I didn't expect the twist. The characters were well developed. HEA. good communication. Over all plot was Interesting, there was no slump.

3.5⭐ This reminded me of A Taste of Gold and Iron except I liked that one a lot more than this. This one was missing the y e a r n i n g and the plot was kind of basic
