I really like Miyazaki's movies, and I think the overall story here was good. Ultimately, I just didn't care very much for this. I couldn't tell what was supposed to be happening a lot of the time, or who was who, or who was talking even. It was quite difficult for me to get through.

Beautiful art and storytelling. I loved the movie and so this is basically the same plot, though I've heard the later volumes go more into the themes of the story than the movie. I'm excited.

I haven't read that much manga, but I'm enjoying this more than any other manga I've read. On top of being a great film director and animator Miyazaki is a wonderful manga artist. The world he's created is fascinating, filled with cool flying ships, bizarre creatures, and compelling characters. There's plenty of action but also political intrigue, a touch of mysticism, and philosophical meditations on the effects of environmental destruction and war. I also like that the main character is a kick-ass girl who is a great fighter and pilot as well as a bit of a prophet and messiah.

This was different from all of the manga I've read before! As an older publication, there was definitely a dated look to the art style that I didn't always love, and sometimes it lacked the right details for me to understand exactly what was going on in the story.
However, the worldbuilding was fascinating, and I liked what I did understand of the story. Hopefully it'll become a little less confusing as I go on!
