According to the introduction from an anthology of Limericks the subject matter of these poems is mostly risque. The clean limerick was developed as a parlor game. Those are the kinds of rhymes found in this collection.

I know this was supposed to be nonsensical but some of it was ridiculous.

A book of limericks is never going to be full of literary genius, but a lot of them seemed to be desperate attempts to make the rhyming pattern based only loosely on the opening line of each poem.

Also, it featured several instances of a pet hate of mine – ‘rhyming’ two words just because they are spelled the same. ‘Prague’ and ‘vague’ do not sound the same, regardless of the letter patterns they share.

Some were good, lots were not. At least it was short.

Lear's limericks are tons of fun, I loved them as a child and I get a huge nostalgia rush if I read them now.

The preeminent example of nonsense literature and limerick. Short mini-tales in verse that are fun, whimsical, humorous, and rhyme, but ultimately don’t have much logical sense, even if the structure of the individual sentences possess a sense, logic, and even a repetitive structural pattern. It is the ultimate example of style before substance, while being light-hearted and lacking the seriousness of other types of literature that emphasize style over meaning such as some of the French Symbolist poets.
