My first audiobook for this year and I'm off to a rather mediocre start. Stutter Creek is a romantic suspense novel that had very little romance but a good bit of suspense. There is a supernatural element to it, which I could have done without. Having read several thrillers last year that had a paranormal element to it which I really enjoyed, this just didn't do it. It was a definite eye-rolling moment. I enjoyed the parts of the story that were dealing with the actual crime and suspense side of the story, but failed to feel connected to the female protagonist. She was just too whiny and feeling too sorry for herself. The story was pretty predictable right from the start, and while I sometimes don't mind that at all, especially with romantic suspense novels, there just were no surprises here at all, apart from the supernatural, slightly religious element that I hadn't expected from the book blurb.
The audio book narration didn't help matters either. The narrator had an odd way off pausing sentences in the unlikeliest of places and listening to his heavy breathing was slightly off-putting. The narration just didn't flow. Narration 2 stars, Story 3 stars.
