This is a great informative book about the Black Panther Party for middle school and up. I think I would have found it even more interesting if I hadn't listened to Freedom! earlier this year which covered a lot of the same information. However, this book does a much better job going into detail about the community work of the Black Panthers and how the media interacted with their work, which greatly informed their perception. I was surprised by the amount of time dedicated at the beginning to history prior to the Black Panther's formation, but it will be very helpful for readers who are not as familiar with historical perspectives outside of what is in American History textbooks. Overall, a really important nonfiction for school libraries and classroom use!

Love that this includes the past leading to the formation of the BPP and the years following to give an excellent foundation of why it was formed and it's enduring impact. Going in I knew some of the social programs the party ran, but was mostly familiar with them as the militant mostly male organization portrayed in the media. I love the wider focus and inclusion of the more "feminine" aspects of the party and their leadership. But damn if reading this doesn't upset you for the injustices perpetrated both past and present
