Unique magic system. Too much details. Boring main character. The secondary characters were a bit likeable though. Mystery wrapped in mystery that took too many pages to resolve.

Unnecessarily complicated at times with the world building of the local religion and politics. All characters are quite two dimensional and the plot lurches along. However this is better than some of his other books.

Decent worldbuilding but often confused exposition for storytelling. Often disjointed transitions.

Took me a long time to read, but I think I want to read the next one. Very detailed writing, so it can be slow going, but an interesting world.

A little slow to start off with, but it reminds me a lot of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books, with a little more of the darker side.

I'm tired of reading training, schooling, academy sf/fantasy books, but not so tired not to appreciate that this one does it differently and better. And yet the first part of the book was dreadfully dull. And most of the rest of the book just had too many words, too many details. And yet there was so much of this book to like - the politics, the class structure, the differences in the families. Call it 3.5 of 5 and the sequel will go on my to-read list.

I am going to say that this book isn’t for everyone. Hell, it wasn’t for me the first two times I tried to read it. This time though I plowed through it. It is not a fast paced book and spends a lot of time in philosophy and world building. I think the pace was what through me the first couple of times but for some reason I was in the right frame of mind and could not put it down.
