Can I give this book 100 stars out of 5? Such a beautiful contemporary book, full of ambition and something else I just can’t quite put my finger on... I’ve tried many different definitions in my mind and I can’t seem to place the word. Melancholy without the dejection? Perhaps it’s best left undefined. Evaristo’s showcasing of human connection, interwoven with intersectional feminist theory and critique was masterful and my soul feels pensive, sunny, rainy, all at once. The experiences of the characters in this book are not my own and I can’t pretend to understand them; but I adored the plaiting of the character’s lives, and the deep exploration of each woman/non-binary person as a human in her/their own right.

The first pages were difficult to get, due to the unconventional writing speech. After some time, the speech actually becomes quite pleasant.
I can understand that the stories are not revolutionary or insightful for someone that feels portrayed on it (women; black women, specifically) or that is looking for a big and loud feminist novel hoarding; but, personally, I felt it was engaging and truthful enough to confront my privilege and revolt my guts, which, in the end, made the reading journey fruitful.

Loved it from start to finish. Brimming with dynamic characters. No punches pulled. Race, sexuality, gender, self-deception, acceptance and brilliantly intertwined
