A prose telling of the horrors of the mau mau rising in Kenya. It is harsh in it's depiction of the cruelties of colonialism and the terror of the colonists when the natives revolt. It also depicts very well how a man is brutalised by his experiences and how he carries his brutality into his personal life. Interesting to read it in this format as I felt it captured in the 50 odd pages really well what a novel might have taken 200 to express , I am sure someone can better express than me why that is. Certainly a format I'd like to try again as I struggle generally to appreciate the subtleties of poetry despite repeatedly trying.

I read this brilliant narrative poem sequence on the plane to Germany. It utterly engrossed me for most of the flight.

it's uncomfortable, violent and unpleasant but really well written and absorbing.
