First things first, this book is a trip! Seriously, I had such a blast reading My Lady Jane! I went into the book not knowing exactly what to expect. I knew it was a humorous retelling of the infamous tale of the real-life Lady Jane Grey and her rapid rise and fall from glory. I even had a some knowledge of the events surrounding her nine-day reign as the Queen of England…and I knew things did NOT end well. So, as I started this book, I wondered exactly how the authors would turn such a depressing and violent story into something, well…funny.

description

Guess what? They totally did it! My Lady Jane takes the story from all the history books, turns it on its head and gives it s humorous and magical spin. The best part? The story ends up being entertaining, heart-warming, inspiring and exciting. I didn’t want this book to end, and as I came to the final pages I found myself thinking “Surely The Lady Janies can dream up some sort of fun sequel so I don’t have to say goodbye to these characters I’ve come to love so much!”

While they used history to build the framework of the book, the authors let their imaginations run wild from there and demonstrated just how creative and funny they are. There wasn’t one moment where I wasn’t entertained or invested completely in the fates of each character. There was just enough reality to make it familiar, but with the added element of magic and tweaking of the story made it feel fresh and new.

There are three POVs in My Lady Jane, and each author was responsible for telling the story from Jane’s, Edward’s and Gifford’s perspective. I really enjoyed the fact that the authors chose to write this way, because each character had a distinct and recognizable voice filled with a ton of personality. I’m preeeetty sure I know who wrote Lady Jane’s POV, but I’ll leave it up to you to decide for yourself.

So I thoroughly enjoyed the playfulness telling of My Lady Jane. I think I laughed my head off with every page. Also, I am in love with Gifford. Like seriously ☺️⭐️

I promised myself to read what really happened to these people and why their stories needed to be altered. I heard it was brutal

Most of the time I don't tend to pick up historical fiction books, I'm not entirely sure why, but boy am I glad I picked up My Lady Jane. I received this book in the June OwlCrate box and I'd heard of it before but I wasn't really sold on it. If it wasn't for it landing on my doorstop, who knows, I may have never picked it up. But once I read the inside flap I knew I had to read it immediately, which is exactly what I did!

"For everyone who knows there was enough room for Leonardo DiCaprio on that door.
And for England. We’re really sorry for what we’re about to do to your history.”

Also with a dedication like that how can you not already love the book.

My Lady Jane is a funny, lighthearted, magical retelling of the Lady Jane Grey who I actually have never heard of because at my school we only learned things pertaining to America. She was a 16 year old girl who was Queen for 9 days before being beheaded. In this version the details are tweaked and history is rewritten in a fun way, interlacing magical elements into the story. It follows three POVs as well as occasionally having the "narrators" commentate along the way.

Edward: King of England, never been kissed, dying
Jane: Edward's cousin and BFF, booknerd, feisty, soon to be married off
Gifford: call me G, poetry lover, part-time horse

Each of the narratives flowed well together, I couldn't even tell the difference between authors. And they made me care about each and every character well except two but you know you're not really meant to like them.

I really enjoyed the magical element. It offered up quite a few laughs and help with some sticky situations. The relationships between characters was another one of my favorite things about this book, especially between Jane and G. Their back and forth banter is officially my favorite thing about the whole book.

This isn't the book for those who want historical accuracy, point by point. But if you like history with a twist then I definitely recommend picking this book up.

I think the reason I got on so well with this book is because I watch the tv show Reign. The season just ended and whenever that happens I always feel the need to fill the void it's left. I've actually been searching for YA books set in that time period but I've yet to actually read one but now that I have I can't wait to continue.

This book has been on my TBR for so long! It was really enjoyable. I actually started off with My Contrary Mary which kind of a spin off of this series, so I kind of knew what to expect. It was really fun to actually recognize that Mary had a small part in this one!
First off, the writing style is fantastic. It's so funny. There were several POVs and they each stood out and were all necessary for their parts of the story. We also get taken out of the story and get commentary from the "narrators" every once in a while which is a really great addition.
It was really fun that these characters were actual historical people with a fantasy twist of some of them being able to turn into animals. I absolutely loved Jane especially since she was a bookworm. I also loved Grace.
The narrator of the audiobook was terrific. She did great voices and she really got into it. I'm definitely happy I read this on audio!

This book was so great. I saw reviews where people said it was funny, but I wasn't prepared to actually close the book and laugh out loud at some points. I almost forgot comedic books were a thing. I really enjoyed all of the characters and their relationships. I was surprised at how reflective they were on their feelings and how they communicated it with each other, like are you sure this is a YA book? I look forward to the future endeavours of the Lady Janies. Also I would love a full collection of G's poetry in the future.

Somehow the second part of the book was less interesting than the first, and it didn't always made sense, that is why i can't give five stars, otherwise i loved it so much.
