I have been meaning to read The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks for quite some time now and I am happy to report that I am not disappointed. I have always been fascinated by zombies more than any other monster due to their uniquely ‘realistic’ nature of being caused by a highly contagious virus. I have also often discussed survival strategies, weapons against the undead and apocalypses scenarios at length. This book satiated my hunger for survival tips, outbreak schema and more information on ‘Recorded Attacks’ - historical or modern. I was also surprised to find that while this guide took its topic seriously, it made me laugh on several occasions and carried with it a peculiar tone of hopefulness and tenacity. The following quotes stood out to me:

“Locate your local police station— and head the other way.”
“Often a school is your best bet— perhaps not for education but certainly for protect from an undead attack.”
“No armour in the world can protect a human from that kind of stupidity.”

Furthermore, the long paragraph at the begining of chapter 6 (‘Living in an Undead World’) seems to me like an early draft of a survivors’ final monologue in a grim but enthralling Hollywood zombie movie. Overall, if you’re a fellow zombie nerd, I highly encourage studying this book or, at the very least, having a copy in your fortress when a Class 4 outbreak inevitably occurs. However, if you are a horror fan I also recommend it, because it has some interesting accounts of zombie attacks in the final chapter filled to the brim with gore. This book is horror writing fuel as much as it is an informative guide to defend yourself against the walking dead.
