This collection starts out with Nevada Dreams, the story of an immigrant with a haunted past finding her way in America. Her gentle, tenuous friendship with the Basco and the base attraction and alcoholism of Wayne McCloud, cowboy poet. I felt these characters, and the story built tragically and beautifully. My favorite story in the collection.

Many of the stories reference Las Vegas - the glitz, the glamour, the destructiveness. Slot Queen calls to mind a mythological being, holding some kind of unknown power and enthralled followers. The Phantom Mercury of Nevada, too, has supernatural implications. Life on the Moon is a tumultuous love story via letters - a man in delusions and a woman helplessly trying to reach him.

The stories are immersive and beautiful, painting small portraits of stories and times.
