Ivan Denisovich Shukhov's life is depressing, yet uplifting. Serving a ten year sentence in a gulag, he's found a way to make it livable, even if it sucks. That he ends the day satisfied and (more or less) happy says a lot about the adaptability of the human spirit and the effect of a (somewhat) positive attitude.

I read this book many years ago (too many to even guess) and enjoyed the detail that this book illustrates.

We had to read this book my senior year in high school, and I feel like the only person in my class who liked it. I was hooked from the beginning, and read the whole novel in a night. Even the mundane tasks of every day where exciting to me in this book.

Second read. My first reading Willets translation. I still think Solzhenitsyn's Gulag is much better, but this short book has historical significance.
