A dense fantasy following the court of a fantasy-England set in what would roughly be the 1700s (though at times I was getting real Tudor court vibes) as the head of a Queen's guard works to fight off a faerie invasion while dealing with court intrigue with the help of the exiled half-fay princess. It's intricate and slow-moving, but I really enjoyed it. I really liked the relationship between Thomas and Kade, whose relationship developed in such a natural way that I really appreciated it. It's a fun read if you're in for something slower moving, though it's very clear this is one of Wells' earliest works and that her storytelling instinct has developed significantly since she wrote this.

Slow, politics-focused. Gave up when young princess and older captain (who'd slept with her stepmother) were obviously about to be a thing.
