a little heavy on the writing at times, but overall a bit of fun.

Delightful and dark, especially for a middle grades novel. Sophie is a fantastic protagonist pressed up against real danger and hardship. The twists at the end are great & they did surprise me a bit. If you like sea monsters, mystery, inventions, horror, and/or badass girls this is a good one for you!

Sophie is an extremely prickly character. At first this rubbed me the wrong way, but she won me over by the end with her tenacity.

I wasn't sure where the story was going, but it was such an interesting (if a bit creepy) ride.

This is a book I would have loved as a child, but even as an adult it was an engaging story with a murky atmosphere. The main character is one who never stops fighting, and the mystery continually gets thicker and thicker. The twists were impossible to guess, and added up with the story, but sometimes it felt like there were far too many of them. Again, for children I think this story would be a hit, but there are some things which didn't logically add up for me which took me out of the story, mostly timeline problems. I thought I would end up giving this book 4 stars, but the ending felt very weak in a lot of ways, and those last few chapters were almost painful to get through. Really liked the turns, surprises and world of this book, but the ending felt flat and forced to me.

I liked the writing style and the characters a lot, it's story world was very dark somehow and in my opinion more for teenagers than for children.
In any case quite original and entertaining. Perfect for Halloween.
