I love the idea but there's something a little off here. The treatment of Sacagawea and Amelia Earhart seemed very pat compared to the male explorers presented here. This one is trying to accomplish a lot but it just hasn't quite met the mark.

Though I like the concept of this series, this particular entry on Explorers doesn't quite hit the mark. At issue is the way it presents Christopher Columbus and Sacajawea - I realize in board book form it's trying to provide an intro without too much depth for the young children reading it, but the explanations of these two, in particular, are too white-centric and avoid addressing the reality of the time and the treatment of the First Nations people who were already on this land. There are many more explorers listed in the back of the book, and a number of them could have been great candidates for their own page spread that might have felt more accurate in their representation. Feels like a missed opportunity. However, I am looking forward to the next book in the series, This Little Trailblazer, which is all female. Will be interested to see if it presents a more balanced perspective.

I might’ve actually loved this one more than my toddler, but it’s very educational while still being fun. I actually learned a little bit more about famous explorers in the process too!

I won this as a Goodreads Giveaway.

This fun little book was a big hit with everybody I've read it to :)

On a personal note, I was thinking adding someone like Sally Ride might have balanced the subjects of the book a little better. That said, I'd still recommend it for anyone's first books collection.

Mentions Christopher Columbus went to America (he didn't) and he was searching for gold (he was searching for spices and was a completely horrible person). Only one woman mentioned.
