I am not part of either community focused on in the book, fandom or pageants, but the writer helped me relate and really did a nice job of letting a character be uncertain about identity. That was probably my favorite part.

this book is an ode to fandom, fanfic, to self-discovery, to us queer kids who read fanfic of two very gay characters because well, queer media was either not accurate or not enough.

i picked up this book because i read something very heavy and wanted a cute rom-com ya book to mellow the feels and this book did that and more. i felt seen with both characters, both of them hiding their identities because they have something to lose in their personal lives or still are unsure of what their identity is.

we follow kay (i know their name is kaylee but in the book, it is more referenced as a kay when they ask people to use they/them pronouns) who is a lot like the most of us, a fandom lover and writes fanfic. they are unsure about their sexuality and want to own into their identity of being nonbinary. so they compile a list to do and the list is done within 12 hours lmao. i expected it to be fast pace but wow, that was fast lol. it was great though because they deserve.

then we follow teagan who is a sweetheart. she's a pageant girlie who needs money for her future. she knows her identity, very lesbian thank you very much, but she can't risk it with her future on the line. but in those same 12 hours kay checks off everything from their list, teagan is risking her future during that time lol.

it's a quick, fast love story that is super cute. i do wish the author expanded more on their disagreement because i didn't like how kay treated teagan based on previous experiences with other ppl (spoiler: theres a pageant girl who bullies kay in their hometown and she also there for miss cosmic teen). i didn't like how kay would take their anger out on tea and the apology was okay, but it wasn't enough for some of the mean shit they said. i also wanted more about kay's mother because it felt like that was another reason kay didn't feel comfortable being in their skin.

though there were parts i wanted to be more developed, this book was great for what it was: a simple, head over heels read about two queer teens trying to find and accept themselves in the blending world of fandom and pageant. what more could you ask for?
