Remi England’s book celebrates the community that both pageants and fandom builds and is able to deal with the damaging aspect of current pageants without writing them entirely off as many who criticize them might. Both Kay and Teagan are able to enjoy the things they love while understanding the toxic behaviors of hateful women and toxic fandom environments.

This book was sweet and the characters felt quite earnest in their emotions, i enjoyed that there was primarily good communication between the characters and their friends and when Kay and Teagan might not have been the best of friends, as MCs in Romance Novels often are, they acknowledged it and actually changed their behavior. I loved Jess as a side character and would have loved to see more of her! Both Kay and Teagan’s character arcs made sense and were enjoyable to read although i would have liked a little more information on their parents because it does feel like the author gave them bad parents to not have to write much interaction with them. The author did a great job writing the MCs queer identities as well as the many others throughout the book and didn’t shy away from the world lesbian which is always a win in my book!

Although this book was sweet, it did feel too short and it felt like the resolutions all happened quite quickly and while i still enjoyed it, it is definitely written for a younger age than I am, which is fair as the characters are younger than i thought they were. This book was gifted to me in a book swap and while i might not read any of the authors other YA, I would definitely read any adult they might have written!

The best book publishing in 2022.

I've been lucky enough to read some amazing books recently, but this one just is the best.

TW: public outing, death of parent (by suicide, before the events of the book, mentioned once)
