Colt Harper: Esteemed Vampire Cat is a quirky, tongue in cheek paranormal work of art. Take a conflicted werewolf, Jax, a tickle fairy with control issues, Lexie, and an Esteemed Vampire Cat, Colt, who enjoys being evil and throw them together for community service and you are asking for trouble. Now add in some Chasers (humans who protect the world from the monsters) and a newbie vampire cat and you have a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and rollicking with laughter. If you are looking for something different give Colt and the gang a try.

This is one of those rare books that deserve more than five stars, I loved it so much that the only negative thing I could find to say about it is that it ended. I’m just thankful there’s another one which I will have to read very soon. This book is full of great humour, cool characters and a concept I never knew I needed.
Colt had all the characteristics associated with your average cat but in human form with added snarky humour. He’s a vampire cat who goes around avenging cats by killing nasty cat hurting humans, I mean what’s not to love about him?!
Then you have Jax the skittish werewolf and Lexi, who happens to be my favourite of the sidekicks, the tickle monster with a tickling addiction.
This book was so much fun to read and I can’t wait to find out what they get up to in the next book. This reviewer - checking out!

I don't know how I stumbled upon this book.

For all its simplicity, it was really quite a fun read.

I picked this book to review purely because of the title and it didn't disappoint. It's as bonkers as you'd suspect. Colt Harper is in trouble again. He possesses people who are cruel to cats and uses their 'meat suits' as he sees fit. He now has to do community service at a amateur dramatics theatre as penance where he meets a werewolf and a woman who tickles people to death.

It's a short book, it's really funny and doesn't care who it offends which just makes it even more perfect. I just loved it

This book was only 153 pages long and I feared that it would never end. So much of the humor of this book relied on unfunny “jokes” that were really popular in the early-to-mid-2010s—jokes that were often just bodyshaming, disregarding consent, and being outright rude and hateful people played off as “being edgy.” Sure, I expected a judgmental, moody, and rude narrator/protagonist; he’s an “esteemed vampire cat,” so obviously a protagonist who’d hold himself in a much higher regard than anyone else. But when one of the first descriptions we get of a character that Colt clearly doesn’t like was that he had “sausage fingers,” I knew this book probably wasn’t for me.
I resent that so many books that try to lean into absurdist humor or themes are ones that use this kind of deeply unoriginal “humor” for shock value. Absurdism isn’t being as gross or rude/offensive as possible. We can have characters that thrive on chaos and behave in strange ways without being actively fatphobic every 10 pages.
Besides all of that, this book was endlessly repetitive. For such a quick read, the author manage to reuse some key phrases several times every few chapters—as if you, the reader, can’t be trusted to remember the (very little) that happened. Plot points are revealed with little rhyme or reason (I guess to be “absurd”?) and Colt himself rarely has to do much work for anything to happen. Characters reveal their intentions and goals at the drop of a hat, and their motivations seem to change just as quickly. One of the only genuinely interesting plot points is that Sean, the man who’s body Colt is possessing, is fighting back against Colt—however, this only seems to resurface when it’s inconvenient for Colt (and convenient for the plot). It’s wrapped up in a way that felt pretty satisfying for me, though, so I’m glad about that.
I don’t believe I’ll be reading anything else from this author any time soon.

Read 33% of it, until it started heading off into romance territory and I really, really didn't want romance here.

Colt Harper: Esteemed Vampire Cat was at once both completely absurd and a very nice read. It was just as weird as the title would make you expect, although the Esteemed part is mostly only through Colt's own eyes.

Colt is sent to do community theatre with some other misbehaving monsters for killing humans, again. If they are not successfully putting on a play at the end of it, they will be taken to 'The Valley'. It's were the bad monsters go (and for some reason have to keep running, for ever). All the while, Colt and his friends are being hunted and Colt's 'borrowed' body starts acting up. But maybe, he's not as alone as he always feared.

Do not expect too much of a plot or a lot of world building, but if you're looking for some laughs, and like the absurd, this is your thing. Tyrolin Puxty's other series (Broken Dolls) makes an appearance, so keep an eye out for that.

I think it will take a certain reader to love this book. I didn't hate it, but I didn't particularly like it either. Look, it was funny and all, but the joke got old long before the book ended. Plus, I found Colt really unlikable. Yes, I understood he had the characteristics of a cat, and that's clever, but I couldn't enjoy him. I found his narrative style annoying and a lot of the comedy slap-stick and weak. I'll still give it three stars though, because I think this is a poor reader to book match rather than poor quality. But I only enjoyed it two stars worth.

Colt Harper is a master vampire cat. In fact, he's the last of his kind. He has made it his mission in life to kill humans who don't treat cats with the love and adoration they deserve. But, things aren't the way they used to be. The Council is against killing humans, so Colt is once again in trouble. Usually his community service is gardening or some other boring job. Since this is his last chance, the punishment is very severe, his punishment this time is community theater. This was a quick read, lots of humor, and Colt and Jax are great together. I received a copy from Net Galley.
