I've loved just about everything Jennifer Weiner has written, so when I got my hands on an ARC of The Breakaway I was giddy with excitement! And Weiner's newest novel didn't disappoint.

This book tackles some tough themes in a way that's relatable and honest, through characters that are likable (even in their flawed imperfection) and a setting (a bicycling trip across NY State along the Empire State Trail) that made me want to plan my own self-discovery adventure.

Lots of content warnings on this one, especially fat-shaming and abortion. I found the constant emphasis on weight to be oppressive, but I guess that's the point. All that being said, I enjoyed this story of Abby as she begins to overcome the toxic focus on weight that she's endured from her family and others. It's not technically a Romance, but there are definitely romantic elements.

And a note about cheating: usually it really bothers me and I DO wish that Weiner could've written it in a way that cheating didn't happen. I think that could've been accomplished pretty easily. But it didn't bother quite as much as normal because I (and everyone else) was rooting for Abby and Sebastian as a couple. Mark was a nice man but stuck in the idea of his 13-year-old crush, and not the right match for Abby.
