Initial thoughts: (4.5 stars) this was super cute story & I read it super fast. Loved the different topics covered, especially the overall theme of kindness & being nice. Liked the humor in it. Not sure if all kids will get every “joke” but adults definitely will! This is only my second Kinney book and I definitely need to read the first one in this series. Overall, enjoyed this one & fans of Kinney should as well!

This was not as fun. I barely smiled while reading it. It made me feel like an adult who's reading middle - grade stuff and complaining about how unfunny they are.

I don't know why there's a drop in quality in the series, but I really hope it gets better.

this book was so fun! i thought it was pretty cool how it switched between the story and real life.

This book was so fun to read. It was chaotic in an intentional way. It is about Rowley writing a fantasy story. We get to see him writing it and we see the story he is writing. It included a male cow named Stephen, Medusa, Sherlock Holmes, Santa, and many other unforgettable characters. It took so many wild turns and I read it in less than an hour.

Listen, I am a massive Greg Heffley fan. I understand that he is an absolute turd of a human being, but that is precisely what I love about him. Rowley is just kind of.... there. I hated the first book in this spin-off series because Greg seemed to be acting out of character (not because it was Rowley's perspective), but he is 100% back to normal in this one.

I thought Rowley's fantasy story - which takes up a majority of the book - was slow and uninteresting, but the scenes where Greg tells him all the changes he should make were hilarious and absolutely felt genuine to Greg's character. I love that Rowley was able to get in digs about being raised right. The few scenes we got with the two of them were exactly what I had been looking for in the first book and didn't see. I'm still not a big fan of this series, but I feel obligated to keep reading because Greg is them.

Rowley writes a fun adventure story and Greg is an ass the whole time. Not sure why Rowley puts up with Greg.
