4.5

4.5 stars. First of all, why is it that no one ever mentions this book when talking about the series??? This was so good and better than the last one by far. I think this is my first time reading friends to lovers to strangers then back to lovers. It was like friends to lovers/second chance wrapped into one. I read this in less than 24 hours because the chapters and the book itself is pretty short but I was hooked the entire time.
Logan and Alyssa are two damaged people who have had very difficult lives. The only difference between them really is that her and her family are financially well off but he isn't. You can feel the connection they have and how they were so desperate to cling on to one another but at the same time it was toxic. Logan's demons were worse than hers. I still felt bad for him though. I felt for Alyssa as well. The only thing I didn't like was that I felt like Alyssa was pretty much begging him to be with her at times.  I loved that they got their happy ending though. Overall this was really emotional and pulled at my heartstrings.

Logan Francis Silverstone and Alyssa Marie Walters were two completely different people. Logan was the bad boy who felt like he carried the weight of his demons on his shoulders and had a difficult upbringing. Alyssa was the sweet, kind girl who seemed to make Logan smile, breathe life into him, and had her own struggles as well despite coming from a family who made a comfortable living. Together, Logan and Alyssa became the best of friends, a coupling people wouldn’t expect, but it made sense to them.

The beginning of the story introduced the way Logan and Alyssa met told through Alyssa’s point of view. In that prologue, it a little bit of Logan’s home situation and Alyssa’s fascination and curiosity about Logan. At first glance, Logan seemed troubled in the sense that he had his own problems to deal with on a daily basis, and Alyssa would catch glances of Logan, and see he wasn’t exactly like the other boys she saw him hang around. The initial first time they met, I found Alyssa endearing and Logan as mysterious.

Cut to two years later, Logan and Alyssa were still best friends, but you could see that over the course of the two years their friendship grew stronger. To the point that during their phone calls, they could tell what the other was feeling or implying how they felt just by little words. I liked seeing how close Alyssa and Logan were, it was like despite everything going on around them, they always had each other to lean on, have each other’s support. The kind of friendship that was lighthearted but also knew the depth of one another.

Since the story was written in parts, it set up the different stages of Alyssa and Logan’s story. For instance, in the first part it showed the beginning of how they met, their friendship turned romantic, but also the heartbreak they suffered, the highs and lows they experienced. Logan and Alyssa thought that their lives were finally in a good place with them finally admitting their love for one another, to having their first time together (Alyssa’s first time), and feeling stronger than ever before. Until, things took a turn and Alyssa and Logan’s love story took a turn for the worst. Through some miscommunication between Alyssa and Logan, Logan felt like he had been deceived by Alyssa, the truth of what she knew that also affected him felt like a mixture of hope, betrayal, and sadness all in the same moment. Suddenly, Logan’s use of drugs got even worse, and with that it resulted in a night that Logan and Alyssa would never forget, the night that inadvertently resulted in the loss of something so precious between them. My heart broke for both Alyssa and Logan, and that was just the tip of the iceberg for them yet again.

This story was filled with angst (to the max) and an emotional rollercoaster. Now if you thought, “The Air He Breathes”, was full of angst and sadness, this book went up a notch and was on another level of heartbreak. Poor Logan and Alyssa went through a lot of sadness and dark times. Logan especially since from a young age, he was always surrounded by his mom doing drugs, and him getting beat by his own parents. Logan’s form of escaping the harsh realities of life pushed him towards the only thing he felt like was worth turning to which were drugs. Logan was a guy who didn’t have much, and while his life was not perfect, he felt like he could always rely on Kellan, and Alyssa, his High.

The second part of the story was a time jump to five years later. In the time jump, it was set after the events in part one. In the past five years, Logan ended up going to rehab to get clean, and move on from his life in Wisconsin, and the love of his life he left behind. With Kellan wanting Logan to come back home in order to attend his wedding, suddenly Logan found himself back home with past members flooding him and being in the same place as Alyssa. For Logan to be back home in True Falls, Wisconsin, he was faced with the memories of the things he lost and learning new news that would devastate him such as, Kellan being sick.

For Logan, Kellan was the only other person he could rely on, so when he found out that Kellan had Cancer, Logan hoped and prayed that he wouldn’t lose his brother, his best friend. I admired the close bond that Kellan and Logan had together. Through out the years, Kellan was always the supportive, protective big brother that made sure Logan had food on his table, made sure to get him the help he needed, and even coming back home he always checked in to make sure Logan was ok. Part of this story highlighted the types of relationships Logan and Alyssa had with their older siblings, but between them I would say Logan and Kellan had a bond that went above and beyond.

The angst was at its all time high with Logan going back and forth on trying to keep his distance from Alyssa. In Logan’s mind, he wanted to prevent from hurting Alyssa again, but he somehow still couldn’t forget the natural ease she put him in or the way she understood him better than anyone despite the five years apart. Poor Alyssa had to deal with the emotional whiplash that Logan seemed to put her in, but they didn’t mean Alyssa was a pushover, nope, my girl made sure to stand her ground and let Logan know that while she would always be there for him, he wouldn’t belittle her to the point of crossing lines.

Despite all that Logan tried, he realized he couldn’t stay away from Alyssa, after all she was his High and he was her Lo. I liked seeing Alyssa and Logan rekindle their friendship because, it allowed them to go back to the “beginning” so to speak and then they naturally flowed back into seeing that their love for another one was still stronger than ever. The friendship they always had was the perfect foundation to move forward. I loved the part when Logan and Alyssa went to the opera since it was such a romantic date for them, and it was something they never did before when they were younger. The love between them was beautiful to watch unfold, and through the hardships they experienced together and individually, they always had each other.

Overall, this was yet another great story that Brittainy wrote. This story was filled with angst, heartbreak, sadness, love, romance, friends to lovers, second chance romance, family, drama, and overcoming obstacles. Kellan was a character that I genuinely liked and I loved the bond between him and Logan (brothers and besties forever). Logan stepped up to help Kellan through all that was he going through with Cancer, and was able to also find his way back to his beloved, Alyssa a.k.a. His High. Alyssa was a sweet soul and I admired her strength and dedication to herself and to Logan. This story definitely had its highs and lows, but it was definitely worth every moment of it. The ending was beautiful and the epilogue was the Cherry on top to solidify Logan and Alyssa’s happily ever after.
