“But does growing up just change your body or your soul?” This quote came to mind while reading because of the discussions regarding unwinding and the aftermath. This book created such an interesting world, and I can’t help but have such an uneasiness while reading certain chapters (cough, cough chapter 61). I will say that this book does a great job at creating intersections between conflicts, problems and topics. The intersectionality of ethics, abortion, philosophy, organ donation, and many more are brought to life through the world building. From the unwinding process (alive in a divided state) to the storming imitative. Enjoyed this book so much.

Unwind is a dynamic and fantastic novel that reminds us that dystopia is not about hypothetical future horrors, but funhouse mirrors that eerily resemble our lived realities.

I read this book in 2010 and decided to reread and see if it was as good as I remember. It was better, and the themes ring loudly post Roe.
The characters start as 2D characters of a troubled teen, ward of the state, and religious tithe which allows the world to be the main character for a while. The world of this book feels familiar (because its mostly Ohio and Arizona) but the rules are different and it takes the reader on a journey to see what the USA has become post Second World War. Once the world is concretely established, the characters, and their relationships between one other, begin to blossom and become complex and whole. Each of their motivations and desires are unique leaving no room for confusion as to why they make the choices that they make even if the choice is wrong. The story is gut-wrenching and visceral from beginning to end.

Very good book. Well written and brilliantly paced. However, I am now traumatised and very concerned for what was going on in the author’s head when he wrote this.

The concept is super interesting and unique, and is definitely one of the more creative concepts I've seen from a dystopia. That said, I wished that Shusterman spent more time on world building, especially since there was clearly so much to unpack in the book. Also, the book tried too hard to play to both pro-life and pro-choice audiences, and it made the whole book seem a bit shallow and redundant and made the characters' conflicts seem less impactful. Great idea, but the execution is lacking.

This was a fascinating concept, and I’m still going to be thinking about it for a while. It’s harrowing - but not entirely out of the realm of possibility which is the scary bit. Lev is the most engaging character by far, and I hope they explore him more. Also did NOT buy the romance, I hope Risa gets more to do next time….

All in all, I enjoyed it - but it’s certainly not perfect by any sense.
