Honestly, probably the best teen vampire novel I've ever read, complete with all the fun bitchiness and drama of high school that I couldn't help but actually enjoy in this.

So I've got this book since december last year and I've been wanting to read it for a while now. I've seen the movie a while ago now, I guess it was last year. At first I thought it was a great movie, but I was kind of upset with myself for seeing the movie first, instead of reading the book first. But in the end, it didn't bother me at all. I forgot most of the details from the movie and I still got to enjoy the book. Thanks to my bookblogger friends (In particuliar you, Melissa!) I finally decided to enter the VA fandom, because guys. I LOVED IT.

First of all, the story was quite original. I mean, the only thing I've read that's about vampires is The Mortal Instruments (well kind of, but nope, I haven't read Twilight yet! Shame on me) so I got a fresh start. And I loved the vampire concept! The vampires were put into another daylight (ironically) by giving them other rules and another way of life. Like I said, I haven't read much vampire stories but I liked the way that this wasn't about the old vampire-human biting thing. This really is about the Moroi and their guardians, and the battle between them and the Strigoi.

Oh my god, and Rose! Can she be my best friend? I liked every bit of her. She was cool and reckless, a total badass. The total opposite of me, maybe that's the reason why I liked her so much. It was refreshing to finally read from the mind of a dangerous character, because I must admit, when you read a lot of contemporary the characters can be kinda boring.

And ofcourse I can't forget Dimitri.. in the movie I thought he was cool, like, OK, cool dude, but in the book. Damn guys, my feelings exploded. He's so loving and loyal. He really is a God. AND CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT IS HE 24?! 24 YOU GUYS. DO I NEED TO SAY MORE?!

Not only the characters were great, I also loved the writing style of Richelle. The book is written from first POV, which is actually my favorite. It was easy to follow, especially because of all the information you get. Everything became clear, slowly, and that's just the way I like a book to go.

I really don't know what's left to say about this book. It's been two days since I read this book, but it still left me struggeling with the words to write this review. If you've already read this book, you're the best, but if you haven't; WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? SPRINT TO THE NEAREST BOOKSTORE OR VISIT YOUR FAVORITE ONLINE BOOKSTORE. BUY IT NOOOOOOW!

Let me just say thank you to all the reviewers out there that have raved and convinced me to read this book!

I have to say I did not expect it to be that good. I liked Rose as a protagonist, she's funny and badass. I loved how her friendship and bond with Lissa was a big part of this book, it's always refreshing reading about friendship instead of the plot to always be focused on the romance. Lissa was a nice contrast to Rose. I appreciate Richelle Mead for not holding back on the swear words and talk about sex as many other authors do. The story is fast paced and very different from other vampire stories. The romance between Dimitri and Rose was well done, not making it feel cheesy or insta-lovey. I also really like Christian, he was sweet. I am definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series as I've heard it gets better with every book.

Fun YA fiction that’s has some good world building.

Typical high school /college age tropey characters that set a scene for upcoming series of books.

The writing isn’t the greatest but for a quick bit of fantasy without heavy romantic scenes, this is good.

At first I wasn't sure about this book. I wasn't sure I wanted to read it. I figured it would be a Twilight/Harry Potter wannabe mix. But it's nothing like that at all. I really and truly loved the book.

Rose's character is strong, sexy, and sure of herself. It's a nice change of pace to have the female protagonist be such a strong character, instead of being the weak one needing saving. Although I do like reading about strong men rescuing the women they love, it was a nice change.

I also cannot help but love Dimitri's character. I look forward to seeing what happens between him and Rose!

My guess is that they will be together in the future books, well guess and hope.

I'm not sure about Lissa. Although I do kind of like her, she's so weak and needy. I'm just not sure about her yet. I do really like Christian though and I'm glad they ended up together at the end of the book.

I also am not sure about them not letting the Moroi use their powers in battle. We’ll see how that goes.

But anyways, I'm intrigued by the series and seeing where Rose and Dimitri's romance ends up as well so I will for sure be reading on into the series. I'm excited to see what happens next!

Wonderful read if you're into vampires. Absolutely loved this book would definitely reread it. Content rating I would say 14+ only because I know how some parents are in my opinion I would allow my 10 year old cousin to read this.

I struggled with this book almost immediately: the beginning felt rushed and unbalanced. I don't quite understand why the story couldn't simply start with the girls at the academy. The escaping plot-line seems unnecessary.

Somewhere along the beginning the book became a little less painful to read, but I had strong feelings of reliving high school/an uninteresting version of Harry Potter: constant gossiping, lots of secretive behavior, boy crushes everywhere, emotionally unstable/volatile teens.

The main thing that slightly redeems the book is the bond between the two main, female characters. It was intriguing and makes for very interesting story development. They shared a very unique, not-romance-based bond that is not often seen in novels and I would have enjoyed seeing the author dig further into what that meant for the two girls. Downside of the bond: frequently, the two girls ended up sounding like the same person.

What I could have done without: the constant boy crushes and especially the one with the older, wiser, godlike, but forbidden guardian...

Conclusion: Mean Girls meets Harry Potter meets Vampires... I was not a big fan of this concoction, but also maybe I need to stop reading YA...

And no, I will not be reading the sequels.
