Book started slow. I actually put it aside the first time. Glad I gave it another chance. Looking forward to the sequel.

Tried reading this earlier in the year—-too many characters introduced all at once for me and not enough time to care about anyone. The story took too long to happen for me.

This book is fantastic and well written. Compelling and likeable characters. Giants and little people (Borrower sized), talking animals, magic and mayhem. And it all makes sense. It is hard to wait to get to the next volume in the series.

The first installment in Redick's fantasy quartet The Chathrand Voyage has its faults, but I don't care. It's a magnificent book, with a level of world-building that beats most other fantasy authors hands down, a gripping story and wonderfully complex characters. But best of all, it avoids the usual fantasy tropes and creates something new and compelling. Maybe this is why it is not as well known as it should be, but if you love fantasy and haven't read this series, go and find it straight away. I'm off to get the second book in the quartet.

:what:

Like....good?? But also?? I don't know how much I retained? Or scenes happened and didn't make sense? And then they did? But then....did they really....

I heard this book is far weaker than the second, and so I pushed myself to get through it, but the relief I feel right now after finishing it is unreal. We'll see if I get around to the second one in time.

Entertaining, but I wasn't interested enough to get the sequel.
