After Wesolowski’s debut Six Stories and its sequel Hydra, I was completely hooked on this series and Changeling has probably become one of my top books of 2021. I knew it would be good but I was not ready for the chilling, supernatural myths, the unsettling secrets and the absolute jaw-dropping twist at the end.

Scott King tells us the chilling mystery of 7-year-old Alfie and his disappearance on Christmas Eve 1988 in Wentshire Forest. We hear the story told from a range of different people this time with a lot of explanation on the strange sightings they see/heard in the forest Aflie ent missing. I made a big mistake of reading a lot of this at night and started to hear a lot of strange noises in my flat because I was fully immersed in the story.

As soon as I started reading this book, I could tell it was a bit different from the rest. Although it is written in the same incredible style, the story seemed to build differently and have a particularly eerie atmosphere. My suspicions were all confirmed when I nearly screamed out loud when the final twist was revealed at the end, I could hardly contain myself and my excitement for this whole series!

This was such a great continuation to the series and I loved how it continued on from the previous books with little callbacks and working off what we already knew about Scott King and Six Stories.

The characters, as per usual, were incredibly well written and were of course so layered that it is them in addition to the intriguing mystery that keeps you interested. I love how we got a wide array of perspectives from those directly involved in the disappearance of the little boy but also those from just outside to some people who are completely removed. And Anne was such an interesting character and I thought it was great how she subtly directed Scott in his inquiries until the final reveal.

The plot was wonderfully constructed and I adored how the reveal was done becasue it was just absolutely brilliant. I did somehow call it, but I had somehow called it but I then convinced myself that it was too far-fetched. I just loved how much it was and it made me so happy to see the ending becasue I loved how it was all wrapped up as it was so satisfying. Especially seeing how it all came together from the little clues along the way.

The writing was incredible and I thought that it was just so brilliant. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.

This is an early review I know but put this on your lists to be read NOW. It’s one of my best books of the year. Oh sweet all that is good in the bookshop – this is a brilliant read from start to finish. And what a finish! Totally taken aback. Didn’t see that coming at all!

The Six Stories is one of the best series I’ve read in a long time and this is my favourite yet. I read it in daylight hours just to be on the safe side. Just as well – this book is creepy and then some. That forest might be fictional but it felt real, let me tell you! It’s all so beautifully crafted – the woods, the noises , the darkness, the fear, the unknown and those legends of changelings, fairy folk and the Wentshire witch.

Read each of the podcast stories slowly and soak it all in – it’s hauntingly good and superbly atmospheric. The writing is as top notch as ever and I really think Matt has surpassed himself this time. Wentshire Woods certainly felt very creep and real to me. Hauntingly atmospheric and lyrically pitch perfect.

Advice from the BookTrail? Put this on your wish list and buy the other two in the series. You might not be able to travel there for real but in your mind and heart and the deepest pit of fear in your chest, you can…

The third Book in the six stories series where a podcast host, Scott King interview six witnesses to a mystery it crime.

This time it is the case of Alfie Marsden, a 7yr old boy who disappears from his father’s car whilst he is checking a knocking in his engine, beside a building site, on the edge of Wentshire Forest.

Are the stories of a witch in the forest true, what strange animals roam amongst the trees, what caused the electrical problems on the site, how can a child disappear completely when no-one else was around. Why did Alfie change after a camping trip in the same woods a year before.

Another cracking story in this series, they really are unputdownable once you start. I really love the podcast format and like all the other books the story builds up nicely with for me the most shocking ending yet, I gasped because I did not see it coming! How rare is that kind of surprise these days, an absolute 5 star read, again!
