"Down home is Granny’s house. Down home is where Lil Alan and his parents and sister will join great-grandparents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Down home is where Lil Alan will hear stories of the ancestors and visit the land that has meant so much to all of them. And down home is where all of the children will find their special way to pay tribute to family history. All the kids have to decide on what tribute to share, but what will Lil Alan do?
In this rich and moving celebration of history, culture, and ritual, Kelly Starling Lyons’ eloquent text explores the power of family traditions. Stunning illustrations by Coretta Scott King Honor-winner Daniel Minter reveal the motion and connections in a large, multi-generational family."

Incredibly beautiful illustrations. Definitely a Caldecott contender.

These illustrations are absolutely glorious! I was a little disappointed that Alan could not come up with a little more as a gift, but just glancing at the acrylic wash was awe-inspiring.

A Caldecott Honor picture book. Not a big fan of the art style but it's fine and interesting. Readable text. But mostly it captures a time and a place even if the place isn't really named. And a feeling and a family.

Very pretty, colorful, and positive. However, the text and feelings expressed create a very nuanced story that especially young readers may not be able to comprehend or fully understand.

This is beautiful. Even though I've only been to one family reunion in my life, this made me think of my own family and the ones who are no longer here. Beyond that, it's such an important story of African-American traditions.

A story about a family reunion and how our main character is nervous about not having anything to give her Great Grandmas,
