*I received a free copy of this book from the author via voracious readers only in exchange for an honest review*
I thought the concept was great however I just couldn’t get into it. I got about a third of the way and realised I didn’t really understand what was going on, I didn’t care about any of the characters and had no motivation to continue.

In the 27th century, magic and technology have merged together to create a dangerous world. After her conviction for a heinous crime, Alys Quinn is forced to work for the Union as an indentured servant. She's a problem-solver of sorts, meant to bridge the gap between the different factions of residents and the ruling class. Alys is strong, impetuous, stubborn and unapologetic, the type of heroine this brutal world needs. But when a complicated investigation reveals some stark truths about the Union's machinations, she'll be forced to do everything in her power to save herself and her son.

I loved Alys, her complicated attitude, and her worldview. Emory and Walker balance out her edges, giving the reader insight into her past and her present. The worldbuilding is a little unsteady, so it may take the reader a bit of time to become fully immersed in Alys's surroundings, but after the first 1/4 or so, the story really takes off. A great new series for fans of fantasy/dystopian/futuristic tales!
