I had the strange experience of accidentally reading the first couple pages of Wings of the Sphinx before realizing I missed some major developments in THIS BOOK. Spoilered myself.

Salvo has a hell of a time with this summer rental house. Last minute of course. Just when you think it can't get worse, here's another problem. The friend's kid constantly doing stupid things like hiding at the truck stop? Is he trying to confirm Darwin's theory, good lord.

I felt bad for Salvo but then he sure dug himself a hole via his existential struggle with aging as things unfold. The end was a nice twist I somehow didn't expect.

Reading about the heat made me glad it's winter & raining here lol.

Superb, I have to revise my last review, this one is now my favourite so far. Superb plotted story and wondeful mix of characters, humour and action.

A very interesting mystery and the ending I could see coming for the final act, especially when something was handed to someone.

This is all my Montalbano fix for this month, look forward to another 5 next month.

It's hard not to sympathise with Montalbano about the heat. Especially as I sit here trying to write this note on a 38°C day. With a worse one to come. It's something that was really particularly marked in this book - the way the heat became a part of the story, just as the sense of place, and character is so very strong. You could see Montalbano and his colleagues slogging out an investigation in the dreadful heat. You could sympathise with him when the holiday house from hell reared its ugly head, and you definitely could understand how he might be tempted by the twin-sister of the murder victim, no matter how wrong it seems.

At the heart of the book is another tightly constructed plot with aspects of the political and the Mafia built in, but not in a manner overwhelming. This isn't a story about the Mafia's control, rather it's a story about the possible outcomes, the idea that some people might be protected as a result of their connections. And it's a story, as always, about Montalbano's dogged pursuit of the truth. To the detriment of a lot around him. Except his meals of course. Some things are sacrosanct.

Always enjoy this series but this book really grabbed me. The vivid descriptions of the food and the misery of living in the August heat of Sicily made me want to dash to the fridge and the pool.
