I've been forced (by myself) to bump this to five stars as I find myself thinking about this book often, pondering and reanalyzing the content.

an interesting well written take on the theseus myth. slightly weirded out by the portrayal of women but I feel like that's because its told from Theseus's POV and it gradually changes.

I've enjoyed ancient legends retold as historical fiction before (most recently Bronze Drum by Phong Nguyen) but in this case it just felt unpleasant and pointless.  I also had issues with the prose style and worldbuilding.   Not everyone can be Tolstoy, but I never felt well oriented or immersed and was constantly struggling to visualize what the author describes.  And I don't care about any of these characters or relationships.  No distinctive personalities, just humorless boring ciphers.  I kept hoping it would pick up — and maybe it does eventually — but I've lost patience for now.
